First Candle In this joyful season of giving, I’d like to take a moment to ask you to consider those who have had something very precious suddenly taken from them. Each year in the U.S. thousands of families lose a son or a daughter to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. SIDS is a cold and heartless killer of infant children, and one that leaves in its wake a remarkably wide path of emotional devastation. I have a little personal experience with this, so I feel it is within my rights to say I despise SIDS – almost as much as I despise what it does to the families it invades. And unlike so many diseases in which the victims themselves serve as passionate spokespeople for a cure, SIDS victims don’t have that ability. These precious children get taken from this world before they ever have a chance to utter their first word, much less open their first Christmas present. In 2006, Santa 1-on-1 entered into a partnership with First Candle, perhaps the leading SIDS organization in the country. For every Santa call that our company arranges for a child, our company will donate $1 of the price of that call to assist First Candle in their mission to eliminate SIDS . In addition, we now have a special section on our order form which will allow you to make a personal donation of any amount to First Candle, with the amount you donate going directly to the fight against SIDS. And thank you as well, in a very meaningful way, for helping ensure that one day every child in this country will have a chance to blow out his or her first candle, and will be able to discover first-hand the spirit of Christmas and the magic of a call from Santa Claus.
